Last night Greg and I celebrated Christmas together as our own little family =) He had to work until 2, so after he got home we both got ready for church for the 5pm service. We had a nice time at church, celebrating the true meaning of Christmas, God's love for us! After church, we came home for an delicious dinner of turkey, green beans, apricot bake, macaroni and cheese (courtesy of Jim N' Nicks BBQ- seriously the BEST mac-n-cheese you will ever put in your mouth), and rolls. For dessert we had some super yummy Carmel Apple Bread Pudding with buttermilk caramel sauce. Soooo goood! After dinner we gave the pups their new toys and then handed out our gifts to each other. We both got some awesome gifts! Greg has a good start on his camping gear now, he got a tent, hiking boots, sleeping pad, camping stove, and Eno doublenest hammock . Greg got me a beautiful monogrammed ring, Glee Karaoke, some new makeup, a Vera Bradley purse, and a weekend getaway in a cabin in the mountains for a weekend in January (his birthday weekend)! After opening presents we got into our pjs and sang some karaoke =) When we woke up this morning with both had a stocking filled with goodies! Mine had fleece pajama pants, 3 pair of really cute argyle socks, some cupcake lotion and bodywash, a beautiful scarf and some skittles! Greg's stocking had a Nalgene water bottle, the mouth piece for the water bottle, camping utensils, camping can opener, camping toilet paper (hehe), carabiner hook, some fun Christmas boxers, and skittles! It was an INCREDIBLE Christmas Eve and Christmas morning!!! We are so truly blessed and enjoyed spending this beautiful holiday together!!

It's a tradition that we spend Christmas night at Greg's parents house, however this year we had to move it up a few hours because of the wintry weather. We had a beautiful white Christmas! When the snow started picking up and started to stick, we worried about being able to get back home, so we left early. We're glad we did this because the roads were not good coming home and we came about an inch from sliding into a jeep beside us at a red light! We had a wonderful night with everyone. Cindy made some delicious potato soup, all the makings for sandwiches, and tons of sweet snacks to munch on! After a yummy meal, it was time for presents! I really enjoy going around one by one to open a present, because I enjoy getting to see what everyone else got. It took quite a while because we all had so many gifts! We are certainly blessed beyond measure between both of our families! Greg and I both go so many wonderful things. I got cute Croc dress shoes and Jenga from Katie and Saunders, several shirts/pullovers, a Vera Bradley wallet, tupperware, Glee season 1, a steam mop and much more from Cindy and Thomas! Greg for a ton of camping stuff like the straps for his hammock from Katie and Saunders, his new backpack, a fire starter, Jetboil Flash, first aid kit, shirts, and lots more. It was so much fun opening gifts, but a ton of fun watching Katie Anne open her gifts and seeing SJ on his first Christmas. Kids just make Christmas so much more joyful and exciting! After the gifts, we went out to take some pictures in the winter wonderland outside. It was so beautiful. It was an excellent night and we love and appreciate all of our wonderful gifts from everyone!

A little life lesson...

** This was a devotion that my mom sent me about a month ago, and I have gone back to reread it several times this holiday season. Sometimes it is tough having our families in two different states, and the holiday season really highlights the distance. I have always been one for tradition and despite how much I cherish the alone time Greg and I have to spend together on Christmas Eve now, I still miss the tradition of being at my grandmother's on Christmas Eve. It's difficult to try and make everyone happy, and there will be times that we just can't make it to everything or years that we celebrate the holiday not on the day with our families, but I am just so blessed that we have such accommodating families that understand this. While I am overjoyed to be starting new traditions with my husband, despite being ecstatic at the prospect of things changing and new traditions being made when we have kids, this girl still has a tough time with change. However, I am looking forward to our four days of Christmas fun with both families! It will be jammed packed, but full of love and laughter and we can't wait!

Holiday Blues

3 Dec 2010

T. Suzanne Eller

“There is joy for those who deal justly with others and always do what is right.”
Psalm 106:3 (NLT)

“I don’t like the holidays,” I whispered.

I used to love holidays. Before I was married. Before I felt the pull to be everywhere at the same time. Before any decisions that I made left someone upset or angry or feeling left out.

I struggled with a desire to be home, to start my own traditions with my young children and husband. We were the first to be married in both families, and thus the first to break “how it’s always been.”

Thanksgiving was a time to be thankful. All I felt was stretched thin. Christmas was a time to be joyous but I usually felt frustrated.

As we had children, I tried to mask my frustration with enthusiasm. We had fun setting out pumpkins. We decorated the house. But inside I wrestled because I knew what was coming.

Looking back, I wonder why I didn’t say anything. Instead, I simply let it fester. I didn’t take into account that if I kept silent things would never change. I just simmered in anger.

Deal with others, but do what is right.

Thirty years later, I treasure the holidays. It took time, but we finally learned to share our needs. “Trying to be everywhere in such a short time is exhausting,” we said.

We began by trying to see other’s point of view. An empty nest left gaps that traditions used to fill. We didn’t approach in anger, but with a willingness to work through the conflict with honesty and grace.

Some were open. Others were not, especially in the beginning. If they were flexible, we rejoiced. If not, we didn’t take it personally. Change takes time.

Perhaps the greatest gift that we received came later. When our children married, suddenly there were several families in the mix. We told our children that it’s not the date on the calendar that makes holidays special. It’s the heart behind the holidays. It’s spending time with people you love.

So, sometimes we get together on Thanksgiving, or maybe the week after. Maybe it’s Christmas only, while Thanksgiving is spent with other family members. If they aren’t with us on a specific day, my husband and I fill that time with a new tradition–just the two of us.

What we discovered is that by letting go, they come more often because there’s no pressure. They let us in on their traditions. Regardless of the date, when we do get together it’s so fun! It’s a gift.

Maybe you’ve been singing the holiday blues. What is one step that you can take to change your tune?

Dear Lord, thank You for my family. I’m grateful for so many things, and one of those is family who loves me enough to want to be with me. Help me to share my needs with my loved ones, and to do it with grace and gentleness. Help me not to take it personal as they struggle with change. If I am the one that is inflexible, help me to bend and grow. Help me to be thankful every day for all that I have been given. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Merry Christmas!!!

Graduation Day...

College graduate Dec. 14, 2010
This past Tuesday I finally made it! I GRADUATED COLLEGE!!! In some ways it seems like I've been in forever, and in others it as seemed like a flash! So much has happened in the past 4.5 years! I certainly haven't lived the "typical" college life, but I have had an absolute blast throughout my college years and I am looking forward to what the future holds! As I said in my previous post, I truly appreciate all of the love and support that I have had over the years! My husband and both of our families are amazing! Thank you all for everything you have done to help me through school!

Here are some of my highlights of "the college years":
  • Living in the super cool dorms on campus. I remember feeling so cool when I first moved in!
  • Meeting some lifelong friends that made classes worth going to!
  • Meeting friends for lunch or dinner in the new dining hall in between classes.
  • Walking all the way across campus from the dorms in the Fall.
  • Meeting the Bartons and taking care of Karis and Laurel
  • Welcoming 2 nieces and 2 nephews into the world!
  • Wine nights with Jillian #2
  • Buying our first house
  • and of course, GETTING MARRIED!

Graduation Party...

Last Sunday Greg threw a fun graduation party for me! He did SOOO much to make the day special and I really appreciated it! He sent out the evites, cleaned the entire house, got all the food ready (with some help of some of Cindy's delicious treats) AND gave me my graduation gift, a new Kindle! It was so much fun getting to see everyone and celebrate my graduation. I truly appreciate everyone's support through my college years and appreciate all who came out on that snowy afternoon!

Thanksgiving numero dos...

Better late than never! We celebrated Thanksgiving with the Glawson/Jones crew the Sunday after Thanksgiving. We had a super time as usual, and were glad to have some time to spend with everyone. Cindy made a fabulous, non-traditional meal of lobster, stuffed mushrooms, potato casserole, shrimp and rice casserole, and more, plus delicious cheesecake and brownies!! We were STUFFED! We are thankful for being a part of two fun families!!
